Green Shield Certified is an international, structural pest management program that evaluates and certifies the pest control practices of pest management providers and facilities. Pest management providers may certify their entire company (100% Green Shield Certified) or a single service they can offer to customers interested in less-toxic pest management.

Green Shield Certified ensures strict adherence to its standards by requiring pest management providers and facilities to undergo a rigorous, on-site evaluation by an integrated pest management (IPM) specialist prior to certification. This program ensures that pest management providers and facilities that attain certification use advanced IPM practices to provide effective, prevention-based pest control that reduces pesticide use, toxicity and potential exposure by preventing pests from entering the building and addressing pest problems at their source.

Green Shield Certified is operated by the IPM Institute of North America, an independent, non-profit organization that has been working in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) since 1998. The Institute launched the program in 2006. NCHH has evaluated the program and determined that it is a credible and is directly relevant to healthier homes. See www.greenshieldcertified.org for more information. The program is run by an independent organization with a long track record in integrated pest management.

NCHH has one caution about this program.

  • If Green Shield Certified's certification does not cover the entire firm, the firm any may offer services not covered. Make sure you are getting Green Shield Certified services. Green Shield Certified requires the firm to tell you when they are offering services not covered by the program - but you should ask to be sure.
